Actually, it’s “Tod’s”

This isn’t really a spoiler, because 1) It’s a line about shoes presented without context and 2) Amazon has some sort of screenshot preventing dark magic in place, so it’s just a screenshot of a subtitle.

Clarkson is using the wrong Tod’s though. He has the city loafers, which are more durable, but noticeably inferior to the original Gomini loafers, as I will explain if I ever get around to finishing my draft about my unhealthy fondness for shoes.

Or Ad-di-das, which I knew because of my deep love of Britpop.

I haven’t worn Tod’s, but I’m with Hammond. Whenever I intend to do some serious driving I put on a pair of Converse.

What loafers was Senna wearing in the famous NSX video? Those are the best driving loafers.

I just retired a pair of beat up Piloti and bought these leather Sparco 77s last fall. My word of advice is they adjust for any foot by loosening the laces but they are extremely narrow and require about 4 months of casual wear to break them in. They have a very firm sole and you can feel every ounce of clutch or brake pedal pressure. Not recommended for wearing to go to shop at any big box store until they have softened the uppers a little. I had the blisters to prove it but after a year of owning them I can now wear them barefoot.

So I fall with Hamster on the Converse as driving shoes. Hive me a nice pair of high tops and I am set.

My general belief, currently owning four different pairs of driving shoes, is that they’re not really any better than a good pair of sneakers. My personal choice is Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66s, which are both very sticky, but flexible.

Hmm, maybe it is due to my hatred for sneakers in general, my feet being large, or a combination of both, but the Converse is supportive enough and thin enough that I don’t feel like I have clown feet in my car. They stay out of the way of each other for foot work and being thin I can feel everything. I would like to try actual racing shoes though.
